The nature of the north
The Kashubian region, the birth place of Balex Metal, is unique in many respects. The picturesque beauty of the landscape clashes with the harsh climate and the hard conditions of working in a land that has hardened generations. The untamed rage of the Baltic Sea, the wild winds, and the difficult farming conditions have shaped the people in the north of Poland into what they are today. This is why Kashubians are said to be practical, enterprising and reliable.
The austerity of the north means that people grow closer. Kashubians care highly for family values and the bonds they share with their communities, on whom they can always rely, not just in their private lives, but also in business. Whether a fish cutting crew, a gang of loggers stubbing the woods, or farmers harvesting together, it is all the same: for generations, collaboration has been highly valued, no matter what the walk of Kashubian life.
And yes, honestly, Kashubians are a stubborn folk. This might be a drawback in human interactions, but it is a great advantage at work. The people of the north are rock-solid; when they give their word, they live by it. This has been highly acclaimed in Scandinavia, where Balex Metal has been Building Together for years.
While manufacturing has been largely automated, Balex Metal places people in the forefront. It is people who control the processing and tend to the quality of the materials and the deployment of new solutions.

|EDIN X-change | 28-29 May 2018
The EDIN Building Materials forum took place on May 28th and 29th in Hilton Hotel, Cologne. European suppliers met EDIN distributors represented by their CEO’s and purchasing managers.
It was a huge opportunity to forge new partnerships and trade opportunities. Suppliers had the possibility to present their product portfolio to purchase responsibles from 17 countries and many doors for new business were opened.
EDIN is already looking forward to deepen the contacts during the X-Change days 2019 with many new partners from both industry and distribution.
During two days the participants from industry and distribution had – apart from an exciting store tour at K-Rauta and Onninen – the possibility to get some inspiring and innovative ideas for their own local business and feel how important it is to join forces in a new digital environment.
After Mr P. Niemi exposed the full spectrum of Kesko’s international activities in Europe, Mrs Vakkilainen (Head of Analytics and Customer Data at Kesko) and Prof. Lasse Mitronen (Aalto University) resumed in an excellent way the blurring market environment:
- new power of consumers
- customer is more mobile and always online
- data and mobile phones are changing our business
- competition landscape is in quick move
- everything and everywhere is data driven
- marketing technologies are changing rapidly
- globalisation is changing the customer and his expectations
- value co-creation by customers and providers
→ necessity of new service platforms, but
- how is service defined in the 21st century?
In resume, the slogan from the first Executive Exchange at tesa in Hamburg is more than valid
‚Today is the slowest day of our life‘
Both Prof. Mitronen and the moderator André Noël Chaker outlined that other branches have been preparing and acting earlier and much more consequently to the fact that the customer has got the remote control in his hands and that joining forces between producers and distributors is thus not only a possibility but a must.
Next meetings for Executive Exchanges are fixed as follows
- 23.-24.10.2018 in Brussels on invitation of Katoen Natie and Menogroup
- 10.-11.04.2019 in Krakow on invitation of Siec Budowlana
